A jumpsuit can be the ultimate statement outfit, don’t you think? In my opinion, the right jumpsuit can look more sophisticated than a skirt or pants outfit and bolder than a dress.
Today I’m sharing five jumpsuit styling tips that work for everyone because 1) jumpsuits are not going away, 2) they work for all ages and body types, and 3) you can wear them dressed up or down and year round. Let’s get started!

1. Look for a structured silhouette.
Finding the right fit is the most important factor. It can determine whether your jumpsuit looks sloppy or sophisticated. Too tight or catwoman-style suits (especially over 40) may appear tacky. And baggy or ill-fitting jumpsuits could make you look shapeless or even frumpy. None of us want that! 😬
While a relaxed fit is fine for for super casual days, at the beach, or on a laid-back vacation, a structured jumpsuit with a tailored silhouette will give you a chic and polished look for the office, special occasions, or evenings out.
I wore this off-the-shoulder, navy jumpsuit from Nordstrom to a formal daytime wedding
last month and was very pleased with it. It runs TTS, and I’m wearing a size 4.
2. Choose the right jumpsuit for your body type.
We all have different body types, and the good news is there are styles that accommodate and flatter your unique shape.
Tall, rectangle shapes can handle more volume, so look for flowy, wide-leg jumpsuits.
Pear/triangle shapes might want to try an off-the-shoulder jumpsuit with a full leg to balance out wider hips.
Apple shapes will find that jumpsuits with a blousier top half and elasticized waist offer a little more room and forgiveness in the middle.
Petite gals can get swallowed up in a lot of material, so look for a slimmer, cropped leg that doesn’t overwhelm you. Be sure to shop in the petite department to get the right proportions for your small frame. Ann Taylor, Nordstrom, and Asos have petite-sized jumpsuits worth looking at, and all three offer free returns. Also, consider pairing your jumpsuit with heels for a more elongated look.
➡️ I’ve linked some of these different styles in the shopping widget at the bottom of this post, and Revolve has some really great-looking ones, too.
I love that this one has pockets!
3. Define your waist.
You definitely do not want to lose your figure, so make sure your jumpsuit defines your waist to accentuate curves and add femininity. If your jumpsuit is gathered at the waist, add a belt to elevate the look, or leave it unbelted if you’re going more casual.
The one I’m wearing comes with a long, tie belt. At first, I tied it in a bow, but after playing around with it, I knotted it like an obi belt and loved the result.
4. Try a solid color jumpsuit.
One head-to-toe color creates a slimming effect. Different or contrasting colors on top and bottom can appear to cut you in half and can also have a shortening effect. One solid color doesn’t break you up and can even divert the eye from problem areas.
If you do decide on a print, consider your proportions. Petite gals may want to stick to smaller prints, and larger gals can wear larger prints. I wore an all-over print jumpsuit in my 5 Reasons to Add a Jumpsuit to Your Wardrobe post.
5. Select your accessories carefully.
You don’t really need a lot of accessories with a jumpsuit. Because many styles have standout features, like this off-the-shoulder one, they speak for themselves, so you can go easy on accessorizing. But, if your personal style is more edgy or flashy, go for it! 💠✨
With a solid color jumpsuit, you have more freedom with accessory color. I could have easily paired this jumpsuit with brightly-colored accessories.
Because my personal style is classic and minimal, and because the event we attended was formal, I went with gold and added a few statement pieces like this cuff bracelet and these palm leaf earrings (love them!). I also added a small gold clutch (similar here and here) and nude heels.

Hi Lisa
You look sensational in this jumpsuit! I love how it accentuates your shoulders and small waist. Love the way you tied the belt. Love the palm earrings and I do like simple when an outfit speaks for itself.

Thank you so much, Jess! I actually have no waist at all – straight as a board, but the belt makes it look that way.

What a great way to showcase this jumpsuit, Lisa!! It’s true that they are such a versatile item for any woman. It’s an easy one and done just like dresses. But for the women that don’t wear dresses….it’s got you covered!!!
