I’ve had this black maxi for several years, but I haven’t worn it much. I think it must have migrated to the back of my closet! Does that ever happen to you? I pulled it out recently and decided to give it new life with these easy black maxi skirt outfits for summer. But first, let me tell you about the skirt.
About this maxi
Length is always an issue for me. This maxi skirt has a ruched fold-over waist, so tall girls like me can just unfold it and get 6″ more length. Average height or petite gals can fold over the waist as much as needed. It has a pull-on style with a little bit of stretch, so it’s very comfortable. This one is sold out, but I found similar skirts here and here.
I own other pieces from this brand, Bobeau. I find their styles to be fashionable, comfortable, flattering, and versatile. Their prices are equivalent to what you’d find at Loft or Ann Taylor, and they have regular and plus sizes.
Outfit #1: Black Maxi Vacation Style
This black maxi skirt is ideal for travel because it’s very comfortable, and its versatility allows for dressing up or down. My split-back faded leopard tank, coral belt, woven purse, and lightweight hoop earrings are all from Anthropologie.
Outfit #2: Maxi with Graphic Tee and Sneakers
I traded in the jeans for my comfortable black maxi skirt and added a few shiny accessories to create this casual and fun daytime look. I’ll be wearing this one for shopping, breakfast or lunch out, a summer concert, or most of all for playing with my little grand buddy.
“Grandma Life” tee (multiple colors) // other Grandma names here // other graphic tees here //
these sneakers would be adorable
Outfit #3: Dressed up Maxi with Polka Dots
I love a classic polka dot top, and the ruffle shoulder detail on this one sold me. I added platform sandals (similar) and used the same coral belt to finish this outfit for a chic summer evening look.
I’ve linked a few other shirts I love that would look great with this maxi. The one-shoulder tops are especially cute, but I know not everyone feels comfortable with their upper arms. The off-the-shoulder one and large-polka dot linen top are beautiful options if you like more upper arm coverage.
If you’re building (or adding to) a capsule wardrobe, a black maxi is worth considering if you don’t own one yet. You can wear it year round, including summer, it will never be out of fashion, and you can style it multiple ways!

Oh it’s beautiful! I love the slit on the side. I’m checking it out for sure! Thank you Lisa for your inspiration and smarts about fashion
Monica Eccher
Thank you, Mo! I had the side slit opened up about 6″ because I like a higher opening.

I love the belt with this outfit. Would never have thought to put that color with black/black/white polka dots! Thank you for pulling me out of my comfort zone!
Rhonda,
Isn’t that belt a fun pop of color? I’m happy you found new inspiration! Thank you for reading.

That happens to me too, Lisa. I find things that I still love in my closet but haven’t been given the love they deserve. And this is the best way to figure out how to style them and make them part of the normal rotation!!
I love maxis for the warmer weather. (which I’ll have you know that it snowed last night here in Denver…ugh)

Hi Jodie
It’s been a cold, wet spring in Colorado for sure…glad we missed the storm this week! I agree with you on shopping my closet and reviving old pieces. I probably hadn’t worn this skirt for 4-5 years, and I’ve worn it twice this week in AZ. Hang in there with the weather!

Just read your post! I love how your mom styled her white jacket, and those boots are great! I also appreciate you showing petite women wearing maxi skirts…they really can work for all ages and sizes.

Lisa, Friday at dinner with friends we girls began talking fashion. I told them my closet has pants, slacks and jeans and lots of tops to choose from. I told them I have not worn a dress or skirt for years except at a wedding three years ago.
So the next morning I got into my guest room closet and pulled out 5 long skirts.
I began trying on ( heavier than I used to be ) I found I had three that I could work with.
Sunday I wore a black ankle length flowing skirt that had a fun white circle print. Over it I wore a white blouse trimmed with a silver zipper and buttons. I chose Silver loop earrings and bracelet . White sandals.
Uncle John was really pleased with the look and I felt very feminine as my skirt moved and flowed around my ankles .
Yesterday I read your article. I love the way you combine style, comfort and appropriate dress. By the way I’m looking for a white blazer!
Aunt Verla
Hi, Aunt Verla,
Thank you for taking the time to comment and let me know…that makes me smile! I can envision your outfit, and it sounds beautiful. I was stuck in a fashion rut of nothing but jeans for years and have recently broken out of it. I still wear jeans, but I’m wearing dresses and skirts more than I ever have, and like you, I feel more feminine and pretty. I’m so happy you’re finding ideas and inspiration here! Say hi to Uncle John, and good luck hunting for that white blazer! 😊

Under $30 at Nordstrom?! That’s a steal of a deal. Looks so comfy for summer!
Hard to find anything for that price at Nordstrom, right? Thanks for stopping by.

I shy away from maxis but I might just rethink that! I love the way you styled this skirt with so many accessories to show us new ways to wear a long skirt.
Appreciate you reading, Phyllis. Glad you found it useful.
