Meet Lisa

Wife. Mom. Grandma. Retired ESL teacher. World traveler. Recent empty nester. That’s me!

Hello! I’m Lisa. Welcome to Midlife in Bloom. Thanks for stopping by!

Born and bred in New Orleans, Louisiana, I set off to Los Angeles in my early 20s to work in the travel and tourism industry. That’s where a handsome California dude swept me off my feet, and we’ve been married ever since. After having our son in ’93, we uprooted from SoCal and planted ourselves in the beautiful Northern Colorado foothills of the Rocky Mountains. Our daughter was born two years later, and I was happily occupied as a stay-at-home mom.

Motherhood enriched me, and as my two kiddos grew and started finding their way, I pursued the college degree that hadn’t been in my previous plans. My lifelong interest in languages and cultures led me to graduate in my 40s with a Master of Arts in Teaching English as a Second Language, and I began a rewarding teaching career at Colorado State University working with international students from around the world. Then simultaneously in 2016, I became an empty nester and retired from teaching.

Like so many others, I began to wonder what was next and searched for purpose and meaning through a variety of activities. For years, I had considered blogging, but I didn’t have a clear direction. I took time for family, travel, and reflection, and in late 2018, my ideas crystallized, and my direction became clear.

Because I’ve always loved beautiful style, exploring the world, and living a healthy lifestyle, my aim is to cultivate this season of life by sharing tips on style, travel, and wellness I’ve learned along the way.

My look is classic with a touch of trend, comfortably chic, and minimal, yet sophisticated. If you like these, too, I hope you join the Midlife in Bloom community and find inspiration for your everyday lives. Let’s embrace and celebrate this season of life!

10 Random Facts About Me

Standing at 5’10” (1.77m), I’m taller than my parents and sisters. No, I wasn’t a model or a basketball or volleyball player, but my stature does help my net game in tennis!

I believe in the power of paying it forward, serving others, and giving back. I’ve volunteered for 25 years in various settings, which has brought value and meaning to my life.

Home is where my heart is; although I love to travel and have been to almost 40 countries and counting, there’s no place like home sweet home.

“There ain’t no tellin’ who you might meet at the car wash!” My husband and I met at a car wash in Hermosa Beach, CA. And yes, we rode away from our wedding on a Harley!

From King Henry XIII and Queen Elizabeth I to the modern royals, I fancy all things British including TV dramas and movies, tea and scones, fish and chips, and of course, Wimbledon.

750 meters of swimming. 25 km of biking. 5 km of running. In my mid-40s, I completed a sprint triathlon. And I’ll never do another one!

Les Mis is one of my favorite stories. I’ve read the book, seen the musical 5 times, watched the movies, own DVDs, and watch them at least once a year.

For 12 years, we called San Pancho, Nayarit, Mexico, home. Our second home. A quaint pueblo on the Pacific coast of Mexico, San Pancho is all charm with spectacular sunsets.

My beautiful daughter was born at home. Yes, it was a planned home birth, and I’d do it again in a heartbeat if I had had more children after her.

I’m a big sports fan! A few highlights include going to the Monaco Grand Prix in 1987 and witnessing Roger Federer win the French Open in Paris in 2009!
